Draycote Water Sailing Club Inter-fleet Competition and Fun Day held on 20th June 2010.

The 4th annual Inter-fleet Sailing Competition was held at Draycote Water Sailing Club on Sunday 20th June with six club teams competing in a series of continuous short races for the Onboard Cup. After 35 races in sunny and moderate but shifty conditions, the Solo Fleet, captained by Jeremy Atkins, emerged as this year’s winners adding a new name to the Cup.

The racing consisted of each team being provided with a Pico, a Vago and a Firefly sailing dinghy to race in a series of short races held in front of the club house. During racing, there were six dinghies of the same type, one from each team, racing each other. Immediately after each race, the dinghy was sailed to a changeover area on shore and the crew swapped over to other team members to head back to the race area for the start of their next race. Teams identified by coloured bibs could easily be seen racing on the water from the spectator area on the club house patio. The course, schedule and location of racing area generated plenty for the spectators to see and a running scoreboard provided interest throughout the day.

The full results were :
1st Solo – 89 points
2nd Miracle – 106 points
3rd Fireball – 110 points
4th Menagerie – 132 points
5th Youth and Junior – 133 points
6th Windsurfers – 173 points.

In addition, children’s lunchtime on water activities involving water balloons and Picos were enjoyed and resulted in lollipop prizes for all those who took part. Children’s fun-runs were also hotly contested for prizes of mugs and sweets.

Dinghy and windsurf taster sessions kept many non-racing participants busy during the day and on shore excellent entertainers provided further fun and amusement for old and young alike. On-shore activities included conjuring, stilt walking, circus style entertainment, face painting, pig roast and equipping the youngsters with water pistols!

Draycote’s on site chandlery, Onboard, and local dinghy repair workshop, Branfibre, provided superb sponsorship and prizes.

The sailing club is also grateful to Rugby School and Warwick University for the loan of their Vagos and Fireflies for the event.
