Sunday Short Course Racing

For those who fancy trying a shorter, tighter and snappier racing experience than the all-day Sunday fleet racing, then look towards the general area of the Committee boat at 11.30am on Sundays. Since mid October a new, short-course racing event has inserted itself into the Sunday timetable and it's open to anyone who wants to give it a try.

Races are around 15-20 minutes with 3 minute starts, and timed for handicap. The event was dreamt up by the Youth and Junior Fleet to provide an exciting but serious alternative racing format.  When initial proposals for this activity received more than a passing interest from the membership at large, it was decided to run it as a regular, mixed fleet event open to all boats.

The racing format is presently run as two courses, one outside the other.  The smaller course is laid in a conventional beat, reach, run layout, suitable for a wide range of boats including Lasers, Comets, Toppers, Cadets, Miracles etc. The second is an outlying course laid in a (predominately) windward-leeward arrangement, for asymmetric boats.  Races presently include 29ers RS 200s & 600s, with interest shown by a number of other boats including RS300s and Contenders. Newcomers can join in with either fast or slow groups, whichever they feel most comfortable with.

In addition to general interest, the event was introduced to bridge a gap that previously existed between Club training courses and Saturday race training on the one hand, and full-on, all-day club racing on the other.  The Short Course Racing activity is conducted in a friendly and supportive way and we welcome any newcomers to racing, including any 'family' boats with parents and youngsters on-board.

The club OD team does not have to run the short course races, but there are some changes to the way that the start line is set which are explained here
